Akranes - The town
The pretty town of Akranes offers a beach, a beautiful forest and a fascinating museum, as well as being home to the nation´s best football team.
After the construction of the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel in 1998, the west of Iceland has become easily accessible. You can now skip the lengthy drive around the never-ending fjord of Hvalfjödur and enjoy the beautiful sights that west Iceland has to offer, in less than an hour.
The town of Akranes lies just across the blue straits and is visible from Reykjavík on a clear day. Settled by Irish brothers in the year 880, it is now a blossoming industrial town with a focus on fishing and fish production.  An area worth visiting is the seafront, especially the beautiful sandy beach, Langisandur, stretched below the center of town.

FC ÍA - The Club
Football has been played in Akranes from the beginning of the last century, and the first football clubs were founded around 1920. Akranes Sports Union (ÍA) was founded in 1946, as a common denominator for sports clubs in Akranes, and from that very time clubs have played football representing the union.
The first victories in football were won the same year, when the junior team became Icelandic champions, and players of that team later became the central players of the Akranes team, that won the Icelandic championship in 1951. This was considered a great event at that time, Akranes being the first team outside the capital winning the title. At this time there were around 2.500 inhabitants in Akranes. From that time on the club has continuously been among the main football teams of Iceland, winning the Icelandic championship 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1970, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1983, 1984, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2001. The cup title was first celebrated in1978 after the team had lost nine final games in a row from the year 1961. After it was won for the first time the team has won the cup title in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1993, 1996, 2000 and finally 2003. The Akranes team played for the first time in the European Tournaments 1978 and since then it has played 58 games in different tournaments. Many renowned teams have been opponents in this period, such as FC Barcelona, Dynamo Kiev, and FC Aberdeen who were all the existing European cup holders when the Akranes team played against them. Apart from these, teams like Feyenoord, Kaiserslautern, Sporting Lissabon, and FC Köln can be mentioned. Many of these games are memorable and the results of many of them good.
Eighteen championships, nine cup titles, three league cup titles and twelve times second seat in the Icelandic championship tells a story.
